Order of Virtuti Militari

The Silver Cross of the Military Order Virtuti Militari.

This commendation is Poland's equivalent to the U.S. Medal of Honor. It is the highest military commendation issued in Poland. Its recipients are, indeed, heroes in defense of their homeland.

Illinois.
82nd Airborne Division.
Died 6 June 1944 during D-Day operations.
Interred in Normandy, France.

ADAM BIEMIASZ
Grabiny, Poland.
Died in December 1939 in Buchenwald concentration camp.

STEPHANIE BIENIASZ PEKALA
Glowaczowa, Poland
Killed in fighting, July 1944.

16 UNNAMED VILLAGERS

Executed on 23 March 1943
For hiding Jews and helping partisans

ANIELA WULKOWICZ

Daughter of Victoria Bieniasz Wulkowicz.
Killed in fighting, July 1944.

Taken prisoner by Japanese in Asia.
Japanese POW in 1944-45.

Sons of Stanislaw Bieniarz in World War II

THEOPHILUS BIENIASZ (U.S. Navy)
Served on battleship USS Missouri in Atlantic.
Then served on destroyer USS Van Valkenburgh in Pacific.
Saw heavy combat action in Okinawa area.
Proceeded to Japan at war's end.

EDMUND BIENIASZ (U.S.Army Air Corps)
Served in California.
Sang on radio from Hollywood USO

CASIMIR BIENIASZ (U.S. Army)
Served in military police.
Made frequent trips on SS Queen Mary escorting captured Germans to POW camps in western USA.
Nearly caught up to brother Chester in Europe on several occasions.

CHESTER BIENIASZ (U.S. Army)
Served in combat engineers unit.
Came ashore at Normandy 4 weeks after D-Day.
Built and destroyed bridges in Europe.
Saw combat in France, Belgium and Germany.
Took part in Battle of the Bulge.
Witnessed concentrations camps in Germany.

DANIEL BIENIARZ (U.S. ARMY)
Activated from Illinois National Guard.
Served with U.S. occupation forces in Europe.
Visited castles on Rhein.
Sent lovely gifts home to mother, Michalina Rak Bieniasz.
